US forces arrest Sunni Leader and then faces all out opposition from Iraqi Government and people before releasing him
US Forces showed extreme signs of frustration when they arrested and briefly detained the head of Iraq's Sunni moderate Islamist group on May 30. Things turned real ugly after that as Sunnis started protesting and the recently elected Iraqi Government officials called for immediate release and investigation.
According to sources from Iraq, U.S. troops arrested Mohsen Abdel Hamid, chief of the Iraqi Islamic Party, along with his three sons s in a pre-dawn raid on the leader's home. The U.S. military later released Hamid following angry protests by Sunnis saying that he was arrested by mistake. Relatives of Hamid said that U.S. soldiers ransacked his house and took him away with a hood over his head. President Jalal Talabani condemned his detention while Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari has ordered an investigation. The Iraqi Islamic Party boycotted the Jan 30 polls after being part of the previous two U.S.-backed interim administrations.
