India gaining ground every day - Iceland supports India’s bid for UN Security Council permanent seat
India is slowly gaining ground on the most critical issue that is facing the country now – inclusion in the UN security council permanently with full Veto power.
According to media sources from Reykjavik, in a boost to India's campaign for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, Iceland Monday [30 May] agreed to co-sponsor the draft resolution of G4 countries to be tabled before the world body next month.
Addressing a joint press interaction with his Iceland counterpart Olafur Ragnar Grimsson after delegation-level talks between the two countries here, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam said Reykjavik has agreed to "co-sponsor the draft resolution of G4 nations."
India, Brazil, Germany and Japan, which constitute the G4 countries, had prepared a draft resolution on expansion recently. This will be placed before the world body next month in New York.
The president also thanked Iceland's continued support to India's canditature for permanent membership to the UNSC.
About his talks today, Kalam said the two sides discussed the possibility of carrying out research jointly on prediction of earthquakes.
"If a breakthrough is achieved, it will be highly beneficial not only to the two countries but to the entire world," he said.
Kalam also evinced interest in geo-thermal power generation technology used by Iceland.
The president said the two countries should also jointly carry out research and development in the pharmaceutical industry.
In his opening remarks, Iceland President Grimsson said that Kalam's visit would increase cooperation between the two nations.
Terming India as a vibrant and the largest democracy in the world, Grimsson said it was a great opportunity for Iceland to cooperate with India in the field of space and science and technology.
"We see a great role ahead of us. India and Iceland have to come a long way together for further cooperation," he said.
