Sunnis in Iraq unite to live under the Shiite rule

Sunnis in Iraq used to rule the country as a minority in Iraq. Now they are living as a minority without much power in the Shiite-Kurd coalition Government.

Sunni clerics closed Baghdad mosques to worshipers on May 21 and advised followers to pray in another location. The mosque closings are part of a three-day protest against the recent killings of Sunni Muslims, which some Sunni clerics have blamed on the Shiite militia group Badr Brigades.

A thousand Sunnis congregated in Baghdad on May 21 to form an alliance of religious, political and tribal groups. The new organization is meant to give Sunnis a stronger role in a Shiite-dominated government. The group's first order of business was to call for the resignation of Iraq's interior minister, who allegedly is involved in the killing of some Sunni clerics.
