South Asian arm race gets a new boost - Britain and Pakistan agrees to boost intelligence and defense collaboration
Britain and Pakistan agreed to work together in the matter of intelligence. Pakistan will also receive sophisticated arms from Britain.
According to media sources from Britain; India has been a far bigger market for British arms than Pakistan over the past few years. But the agreement, signed by Sir Kevin Tebbit, top official at the Ministry of Defence, and his Pakistani counterpart, Lieutenant General Ali Muhammad Jan, signals the UK government's intention to increase arms exports to India's nuclear neighbour and the west's ally in the "war on terror".
Both sides agreed to hold joint exercises, cooperate in military training and promote the transfer of technology.
Individual licences for British arms exports to Pakistan have increased in value from pounds 15m in 2002 to pounds 40.5m last year. Britain shipped pounds 78m worth of arms to India in 2003 and just pounds 4m to Pakistan, according to official figures.
The new memorandum of understanding between Pakistan and Britain signals the new start of an elevated arms race in South Asia.
