India’s lunar mission is on track – Europe to participate with India
India’s lunar mission as announced in March 2005 is on schedule. Indian Space Research Organization is proceeding ahead as planned.
The European Space Agency (ESA) will provide some gadgets to analyse the lunar surface for India's moon mission Chandrayaan-1 as per the cooperation agreement reached with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).
The ESA Council, at its meeting in Paris on March 17, unanimously approved a cooperation agreement between ESA and ISRO for Chandrayaan-1, the Akash Ganga Centre for Astronomy (AGCA) said in Mumbai today quoting ESA sources.
Under the agreement, ESA will provide and support for the lunar explorer CIXS-2 (Chandrayaan-1 Imaging X-Ray Spectrometer), SARA (a Sub-keV Atom Reflecting Analyzer) and SIR-2 (a Near-Infrared Spectrometer).
ESA will support hardware for the HEX, High-Energy X-ray Spectrometer. Data from these instruments will be turned over to the ESA for distribution to ESA member states, the sources said adding, these instruments are the same as the ones carried onboard ESA's SMART-1 moon exploration spacecraft.
ISRO plans to launch Chandrayaan-1 in 2007-08 to analyze the moon to understand its origin and evolution. ESA will provide three scientific instruments identical to ones on SMART-1, currently orbiting the moon, the AGCA said.
