EU joins India’s effort to restore multiparty democracy in Nepal

May 17, 2005

European Union has joined India’s attempt to restore multi party democracy in Nepal.

Welcoming the common program endorsed by seven political parties for restoration of democracy, the European Union has pointed out the immediate need for talks between the king and the political parties.

The present chairman of the EU in Kathmandu, the British Embassy, has asked both sides to show flexibility in the run up to dialogue.

Earlier, the United States had also supported the common program.

"Development of multiparty democracy is the consensus and permanent road to conflict resolution," a statement issued by the European Union said. "The Union asks both the Maoists and the government to respect human rights. And it also condemns violation of human rights at all levels."

According to our correspondent in New Delhi, India has also welcomed the unity move of the seven parties "to reinstate political stability and economic prosperity".

"India welcomes the common declaration made by Nepal's major political parties to confront the challenges there," Indian government spokesperson Navtej Sarna said.

He expressed belief that the common program will restore multi-party democracy and solve the armed conflict.
