Maoists create simultaneous strikes in Nepal
Eknath Hosalkar
May 10, 2005

Maoists went on major offensive in Nepal. The Nepalese army and police faced one of the biggest challenges.

Maoist rebels launched simultaneous attacks against security posts in Nepal on May 10, resulting in the death of 26 insurgents and four soldiers, and the wounding of 30 civilians. Thirty policemen also were reported missing in the aftermath of the attacks. The Nepalese military said the clashes occurred at checkpoints along a principal southeast highway. U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Christina Rocca is in Kathmandu to press King Gyanendra to restore democratic rule in the Himalayan kingdom.

India continues to provide the military assistance to the Hindu Kingdom.

Nepalese security authorities sound confident that they can repel the Maoist attacks.
