Afghanistan to offer Amnesty Offer For Mullah Omar
Sonia Chopra
May 10, 2005

According to sources, in an effort to bring the Talibans into the main stream Afghan politics, the country may offer amnesty to the head of Talibans.

The head of Afghanistan's Independent National Commission for Peace, Sibghatullah Mojaddedi, said May 9 that fugitive Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar and Hizb-i-Islami chief Gulbuddin Hekmatyar could be granted amnesty and allowed to enter politics. Stressing that Kabul had granted the commission authority to give a reprieve to both jihadist figureheads, Mojaddedi said the government no longer is pursuing earlier hardline policies toward both men. Mojaddedi, a former president and leader of a mujahideen faction, went on to say that amnesty would be granted to those who relinquish their weapons, abide by the constitution and accept the authority of the current government.
