Pakistan capturing Al-Queda operators left and right - capturing or providing safe heaven?
Balaji Reddy
May 5, 2005

Something interesting is happening. As Americans are eager to capture the Al-Queda operatives in and outside Paksitan, Pakistan is extra fortunate to get big Al-Queda fishes one after the other. It seems Al-Queda people are eager to surrender with the Pakistanis. Rumors are floating around that Al-Queda people who like to desert Al-Queda are eager to surrender Pakistanis than the Americans. Pakistan has not prosecuted with real tough sentence to any of these Al-Queda operators. It is possible that Pakistan is providing jail cells as safe heaven for these ex-militants. One thing is good though – the militants for the time being are out of business. But Pakistan can release them any time and they will be back in business.

Pakistani officials May 5 rearrested Mushtaq Ahmed, who escaped from prison after receiving a death sentence for plotting to kill President Gen. Pervez Musharraf. Authorities captured Ahmed on a bus traveling from Lahore. He belonged to a group convicted of bombing a bridge that collapsed moments after Musharraf's convoy passed over it.

Pakistani security forces carried out more raids in several Pakistani cities and arrested about two dozen suspected al Qaeda members using information given by al Qaeda No. 3 leader Abu Farj al-Libi during interrogations, officials said May 5. Al-Libi has been brought to the city of Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, for questioning, the officials said.

You can expect many more Al-Queda arrests. But the real question is Pakistan’s motive – are they arresting them or put them away for the time being for future Jihad when time is better!
