Sri Lanka is taking steps that may not only bring goodwill to the nation but also make Tamil Tigers more conducive to peace talks.
According to media sources, Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga has vowed to establish a mechanism with Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam militants to distribute tsunami aid, even if it brings down her government, according to May 4 media reports. Saying the aid money would be used to create a separate Tamil homeland, members of the Marxist People's Liberation Front have threatened to pull out of the ruling coalition if the joint mechanism is established. Sri Lanka, where more than 30,000 were killed in the Dec. 26 tsunami, has received $2 billion in pledges of aid, but lacks a deal with the Tigers to get the aid distributed.
