Longhorn – can Microsoft make it?
Longhorn is the code name for Microsoft’s newest innovation that will eventually make or break the company. Longhorn is the next Windows® of the world. When we used it we like certain features but the hype is real. What is strikingly good is the search and find facility on the desktop. It integrates the searching of desktop, Web, emails, Photos and what not.
But something is missing. You can add My Contacts and My Hardware nodes to the Longhorn Start Menu. My Computer now features disk space graphics under each drive and a slightly modified Task pane, with integrated searching. Special shell folders such as My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music have been revamped to support the new Preview view style. While the old Display Properties dialog is temporarily still available, Microsoft provides a preview of the new Display Properties application, which was written with the new .NET-based Avalon APIs.
A lot depends on Longhorn for Microsoft. It has some good features but performance is slower and requires hardware upgrades as usual. The intuitiveness is less prominent as Microsoft takes the approach to make the user sophisticated.
Will it make it? Experts say 50% chance it will! After all it is Microsoft – that makes it 95% of success. But you never know, Longhorn flop may be the break Linux was waiting for!
