Venezuela passes land law – follows India’s Green Revolution principles for self-sufficiency in food

Venezuela passed the new land law that empowers the farmer for productivity and prosperity. International think tanks believe that this will provide self-sufficiency in food for the oil rich Venezuela. The country has adopted similar policies to that of India in early seventies – the Great Green Revolution of India that made India self-sufficient in food production.

The Venezuelan National Assembly approved a law April 28 empowering the government to break up large and underutilized or idle land holdings and redistribute the land to peasants for productive uses. The law stipulates that land that is fully utilized for productive purposes, regardless of estate size, will not be subject to expropriation, and it includes compensatory measures for owners whose land holdings are confiscated. A government spokesman said the purpose of the law is to make Venezuela agriculturally independent by making the country self-sufficient in food production.
