India plans to push for UN Security Council permanent seat as UN Secretary General Kofi Annan visits the country
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan will arrive in India tomorrow on a four-day visit, during which New Delhi is expected to press its case for a permanent UN Security Council seat, the foreign ministry said.
India is among the leading aspirants for a permanent seat on the Security Council, saying it deserves a spot in light of its billion-plus population and growing economic clout.
"The visit of the UN secretary general takes place at a critical juncture with ... India's interaction with the UN on several important issues," the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Annan, who last visited India in 2001, will hold talks with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Abdul Kalam, the statement added.
Annan's visit comes against the backdrop of far-reaching proposals that he made to world leaders a month ago and follows a trip to Jakarta to attend a weekend summit of Asian and African leaders.
One of the most sensitive ideas is to expand the 15-member Security Council, with Annan offering two models. One option would add six new members to its five permanent powers -- Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States.
The other will add a third tier of semi-permanent members to the council, the top UN body for international peace and security.
Brazil, Germany, India and Japan have launched a joint bid to win prestigious permanent seats, whose veto-wielding privilege dates from World War II.
