China and Japan ready to heat up the old Asian rivalry – perception of two distinct military blocks forming
China and Japan have experience bitterness against each other in recent days. The old rivalry is back and the perception of two distinct military blocks is forming.
Japanese police in Yokohama on April 20 arrested a man minutes after he threw a Molotov cocktail at a Bank of China branch office, though no injuries or material damages were reported. Some 25 attacks against Chinese interests have occurred since anti-Japan demonstrations erupted in China in early April.
Some 25 members of Japan's Self Defense Force (SDF) will take part in command-post exercises in the U.S.-Thai Cobra Gold military exercises May 2-13. This will be the first SDF participation in the exercises, though it has observed them since 2001. Japan's exercise will be in the Thai city of Chiang Mai, focusing on disaster-relief operations.
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing told Japanese Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura on April 17th that Beijing would not apologize for weeks of anti-Japanese protests throughout China. Some Chinese are furious with Japan for perceived transgressions, including a newly revised Japanese school textbook that many believe whitewashes the Japanese occupation of China between 1931-1945, Tokyo's bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council and alleged Japanese involvement in the Taiwan issue.
The Japan China rivalry can explode into a major crisis if Japan plans to instigate China by promoting Independent Taiwan card in retaliation to China’s opposition in Japan’s bid for UN Security Council permanent membership.
