U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice tries to find a common ground with Moscow
A very important relationship-building mission is under way that may determine the US-Russian relations in the next many years. U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is in Moscow to build the groundwork for US President Bush to visit Russia next month and build the bilateral relationship that is strained for many reasons.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in Moscow on April 19 for a two-day visit with top Russian officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, and to prepare for U.S. President George W. Bush's May 9 visit. Upon her arrival, Rice criticized Russia's progress on issues such as democracy, nuclear safety and its energy policy.
U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says the Bush administration is watching the fraud trial of former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky to see what the outcome "says about rule of law in Russia." In an April 20 interview with Moscow radio station Ekho Moskvy, Rice also said that Russia needs to do more to develop its democracy, including permitting the growth of an independent news media. Rice also criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin's concentration of power.
