For actress Neha Phendse, the image of a ''''cute little girl'''' that came across in many TV serials she did as a child artiste is, however something that now belongs to the past. As Neha, who in person seems very much the typical ''''girl-next-door'''' of Bollywood films, gets ready to make her Hindi film debut in Ashish Chanana's ''''Dreams'''', she is no longer the child who did roles in television serials ''''just for a lark''''.
Instead, the person who one meets, on the eve of the release of her first Hindi Feature film, Ashish Chanana's ''''Dreams'''', is a ''''mature'''' woman who wants to do roles that provide her a creative challenge as well as satisfaction as an actress. In fact, ''''creatively challenging'''' is how she describes her role in ''''Dreams'''', that releases all over India on April 22.
For Neha, who has done many a film down South in the last few years, it was a chance encounter with Ashish in a gym that got her the role. "Ashish spotted me in a gym. Immediately thereafter, he approached me for the role in ''''Dreams''''.
The overriding factor that led me to take up the role was the film's story, which revolves around this girl Pooja that I play.
In today's times, it is quite rare for an actress, more so a newcomer, to get a woman-oriented subject or film, "Neha said.
After ''''Dreams'''', Neha will be seen in ''''Nothing But Life'''', a Malayalam-English bilingual, being directed by Rajiv Anchal.
"The shooting for the film, where I co-star with South star Madhavan is already complete and it will be released shortly," Neha said.
As an actress, her ideals are Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi. "Both Madhuri Dixit and Sridevi have proved themselves as capable of carrying off roles of a ''''girl-next-door'''' as well as ''''glamorous'''' ones. There, as an actress they are my ideals," Neha said.
