BJP sweeps UP mayoral polls Congress routed

The election shows how UP has shifted away from Gandhi regime. The total rout of Congress party is significant because it shows how disgusted people are with the ruling party in New Delhi.

BJp had won seven out of 12 seats, including Lucknow, and was leading at three places till the results last came in on Saturday evening. The Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party didn''t contest the four-phase civic polls but the candidates supported by them won one seat each. As for Congress, it was a total wipeout for the party which failed to win a single seat.

The poor performance of the Congress even in the local bodies'' election doesn''t bode well for the UPA coalition. The UPA doesn''t seem to have a gameplan to check the down-the-hill journey one-and a half years before the ultimate test in 2014.

The saffron party successfully defended its bastions Lucknow, Varanasi and Agra. In Lucknow, Prof Dinesh Sharma was re-elected as mayor with a margin of 1.12 lakh votes, highest ever in urban local bodies elections in the state. It also won Jhansi, Morabadabd, Agra, Aligarh, Varanasi and Gorakhpur and was leading in Kanpur, Ghaziabad, Meerut.
