The B612 Foundation wants to launch its own space telescope to spot and track small and mid-sized space rocks capable of wiping out a city or continent. So far the project is on paper only.

While NASA has discovered "90 percent of the biggest threats" that could destroy life on Earth, the group wants to focus on the smaller asteroids that have yet to be discovered. Under the plan, Sentinel Space Telescope would be sent into space and "data will be beamed back through NASA's antenna network under a deal with the space agency." Cost is expected to be an issue. For instance, "NASA explored doing such a mission in the past but never moved forward because of the expense." However, Don Yeomans of NASA's Near-Earth Object Program, said, "It's always best to find these things quickly and track them. There might be one with our name on it."
