Politics in Indian Army take a turn

Indian Army is clearly divided into factions. Gen Gen Bikram Singh lifts discipline ban on Lt Gen Suhag, a general of same political camp.

General VK Singh (retd) had initiated disciplinary action against Suhag, currently commanding Dimapur-based 3 Corp, for alleged lapses in handling a failed intelligence operation in Assam’s Jorhat district last year. The notice had charged General Suhag with abdicating responsibility and acting in most unprofessional and lackadaisical manner in handling the intelligence and surveillance unit that had carried out that operation.VK Singh had taken action against Suhag for allegedly not taking appropriate steps to investigate the circumstances under which a 3 Corps intelligence unit conducted that operation in Jorhat on December 20-21. A havaldar had allegedly stolen a weapon and a mobile phone during that operation. VK Singh had targeted Suhag before as well. In a development that took defence minister AK Antony by surprise in March, the former chief dug out a May 2011 letter written by a Trinamool MP and directly sought a CBI probe against Suhag who was accused of corruption by the politician.

Army chief General Bikram Singh has reversed his predecessor VK Singh’s decision to bar a top general from heading the army’s Kolkata-based Eastern Command. The political camps in Indian Army are vocal and strong - an early sign of internal feud and groupism within the Army.
