NASA is preparing to deploy a pair of unmanned aircraft above stormy skies to help forecasters improve their understanding of hurricane formation and intensity changes.

A set of two Global Hawks will be sent to the Atlantic Ocean basin to monitor the environment around hurricanes as well as the eyewall and rain band winds and precipitation. According to Principal investigator Scott Braun of the Goddard Space Flight Center this hurricane monitoring mission seeks to improve our understanding of these processes by taking advantage of the surveillance capabilities of the Global Hawk along with measurements from a suite of advanced instruments.
