The U.S. is encouraging India for an active role in Afghanistan. After many years of keeping New Delhi's participation limited, the American foreign policy is recognizing India as the balancing power against that of Pakistan and China. China is already making its small border with Afghanistan ready with roads, tunnels and other military as well business infrastructure.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta arrived in New Delhi Tuesday for talks with Indian Prime minister Manmohan Singh and National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon. The topics will include China's adventures in securing South China sea for itself and Indian control and influence in Afghanistan.
On Wednesday, Mr. Panetta is due to meet with the defense minister, A.K. Antony, and deliver a speech on the growing U.S.-India military and economic partnership.
Defense officials briefing reporters on the visit said, among other issues, Mr. Panetta planned to discuss how India could take a more active role in Afghanistan, especially after NATO withdrawal.
Sources in New Delhi say, India is aware of its probable role. India is also wary of Chinese plans in the region and Chinese influence on Pakistan and Taliban.
