Glenn Research Center is helping develop more robust spacecraft that can better explore Venus. In the fall, Glenn officials will activate a new, one-of-a-kind simulation chamber capable of mimicking Venus's brutal temperatures, squashing pressures and harsh atmospheric stew. According to Glenn aerospace engineers, if you want to send a spacecraft to the surface, the only way to guarantee your equipment will survive is to simulate all the layers of the atmosphere, which is why the Glenn Extreme Environments Rig (GEER) is needed. Researchers are also improving an advanced Stirling radioisotope generator to better power vehicles that will not be able to use sunlight because of the cloud cover. Glenn's engineering group added, they believe they have the technologies ready to do these missions, and they are working at getting them ready for flight.
