Chinese and Indian airlines revolt against EU plan to charge carriers for their pollution

In the last week more than nine Chinese and Indian airlines refused to provide carbon emissions data to EU. This is regarded by the Europeans as a blatant disregard for the rules set by Brussels to charge carriers for their pollution. The airlines from India and China may be banned from flying to EU countries if they refuse to comply with its carbon emissions trading scheme.

Both India and China have threatened to ban European airlines from its airspace if Brussels sanctions Asian carriers in a controversial air carrier spur to charge airlines for their generated pollution.

Ajit Singh, Indian civil aviation minister, said in an interview that India and China are determined not to obey illogical EU rules to control world air traffic and revenues and profitability from it. “Travelling is always a two-way traffic,” Mr. Singh said. “If they can impose sanctions so can other countries including India.”

"The European Union is a sovereign union, they can make laws for themselves but they cannot make laws for the whole world,” Indian aviation minister added. “If you allow this, next they will impose a carbon tax on shipping or cement.”
