Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez nervous about coup? Will BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) help Chavez?
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is taking control of some militia. International think tank believes he is concerned about attempts of foreign government influenced coup.
He has announced the establishment of a new reserve military force that will grow to two million members and be under his direct control, the BBC reported April 14. During a ceremony commemorating the second anniversary of a failed attempt to overthrow his government, Chavez said large numbers of civilians will be trained and armed in the form of local militias.
Wary about American foreign policy, he has expanded his relations with Russia, China, India and Iran. Many believe he may face more coups. The oil asset of Venezuela makes it vulnerable. But China, India and Russia have interest in the same. That may make some difference. The BRIC alliance (Brazil, Russia, India and China) will oppose any invasion or external intervention in Venezuela. It will interest to see how BRIC will defend its Venezuelan oil interests in case of a similar crisis.
