Indian Govt to address Air India pilots'' grievances in two months
Parth Adarsh
May 19, 2012

As the strike by Air India pilots entered its 12th day, the government on Saturday appealed to them to report for work, promising it would resolve their problems within three months.

“We are making efforts to resolve the situation... I will appeal to the pilots that they should think about the passengers,” he said. The stir has already cost the ailing Air India Rs 200 crore.

Singh is scheduled to meet representatives of Air India employees’ unions next week. The meeting is significant as the government prepares the ground to implement the recommendations of the Dharmadhikari Committee on pay rationalisation and service conditions. The report is said to have made suggestions like allowing pilots of Air India and the erstwhile Indian Airlines to be cross-utilised for all aircraft in the merged airline’s fleet, while having different seniority criteria for them. It has also reportedly suggested bringing about pay parity between employees of the now merged airline.

The Indian Pilots Guild, which has been spearheading the pilots’ stir and was recently de-recognised, has not been invited. Meanwhile, even as the airline on Saturday issued advertisements in newspapers to assure passengers that its domestic network was unaffected, its domestic network, too, had started feeling the pinch of the strike.
