China seeks increased influence in a region traditionally dominated by India. It just opened a new embassy in Maldives and requested an upgrade of its SAARC membership. India is worried of Chinese expansion in South Asia.
Chinese new embassy in the Maldives opened a few days before the summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation will try to influence Chinese interest in the region. China wants to upgrade its current observer status in the eight-nation regional grouping making it a strong stakeholder in a region of Indian stronghold.
“There was no hurry or further discussion to make China a dialogue partner other than an observer which China is,” Maldives President Mohammed Nasheed said Friday.
