Chinese protests against Japan becoming permanent member of UN Security Council
China is not comfortable allowing Japan to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. This was made clear by Chinese demonstrations in Beijing.
A ten thousand-strong demonstration was held on April 9th in Beijing, protesting Japan's World War II record in China and its bid for a permanent seat in the U.N. Security Council. Demonstrators pelted the Japanese Embassy and the Japanese Ambassador's residence with rocks, bottles and cans. They also smashed the windows of a Japanese restaurant. The Japanese Foreign Ministry called the rally "extremely regrettable," Agence France-Presse said.
Japan, India and Germany are lobbying for permanent membership in the UN Security Council. Because of Second World War and its memory many in the world oppose Japan and Germany to ever join the Security Council permanently. Many are also concerned by the fact that India with 20% of world population is not a member of the UN Security Council.
