Tata Motors all set to challenge West Bengal on Singur land act
Sudip Lahiri
Nov. 1, 2011

West Bengal Government enacted into law nullifying Ratan Tata's Singur land deal. Mamata Bannerjee's government would have distributed the 997 acres of land back to the farmers. But Tata is all set to challenge the act on the grounds that it was unconstitutional, illegal and bad in law.
The auto company had to shift its Nano small car plant to Gujarat owing to protests by farmers led by the Trinamool Congress that sought the return of 400 acres taken from those who were reportedly unwilling to part with their lands.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said the state government would begin distributing land once the status quo was over. But with the company challenging the order, an extension of status quo was likely to be sought.
