India moves forward to build Afghan-Iran rail link reducing Afghan dependence on Pakistan
Kiran Chaube
Oct. 31, 2011

India moves forward to build Afghan-Iran rail link reducing Afghan dependence on Pakistan. One of the reason Afghanistan is dependent on Pakistan is its lack of access to the sea. India has moved to change that geopolitical fact.

India will help construct a 900-km railway line that will connect Chabahar port in Iran, being built with Indian help, to the mineral-rich Hajigak region of Afghanistan.

Chabahar is just 72 km west of Pakistan's Gwadar port, being built with Chinese help.

It is an interesting move by India. It allows India to access Afghanistan's mineral rich areas to help develop the nation after Americans leave the region. India is also strategically positioning itself to access central Asian minerals, oil, and natural gas.

India is also defying American wishes to partner with Iran in this development effort. India believes Iran's involvement and cooperation is essential to make sure Pakistan's influence on Afghanistan is reduced on the long run after NATO and America depart from the region due to western economic collapse.
