Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was misquoted as saying the government would honor Kurdish oil production-sharing contracts, Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Hussein Shahristani said Feb. 7. The government only signed service contracts, which will need to be amended to show that they are service contracts in order to be approved, Shahristani said. Al-Maliki was misunderstood and misquoted by AFP, and the statement he made does not represent the position of the prime minister or of the government, Shahristani added.
