India and Uzbekistan strategic partnership announced.
Sunil Rane
Apr. 6, 2005

India and Uzbekistan announced that they will cooperate and work together strategically in the area of defense, fighting terrorism and helping Afghanistan develop as a viable nation.

According to media report, Uzbek President Islam Karimov issued a joint statement on April 5th with the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicating Uzbekistan's support for India's entry in the U.N. Security Council as a permanent member. Defense ministers for the two countries also signed an agreement to cooperate "in military and military-technical areas."

India and Uzbekistan agreed to fight terrorism on a "long and sustained" basis in an effort to support Afghanistan's attempt to form a "strong, united, prosperous and independent" country, Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said following April 5 talks. They also emphasized the importance of the construction of the Zaranj-Delaram road, a trans-Afghanistan transport road built by India that is vital to connecting Uzbekistan to the Chahbahar port in Iran.
