India and Uzbekistan strategic partnership announced.
India and Uzbekistan announced that they will cooperate and work together strategically in the area of defense, fighting terrorism and helping Afghanistan develop as a viable nation.
According to media report, Uzbek President Islam Karimov issued a joint statement on April 5th with the Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh indicating Uzbekistan's support for India's entry in the U.N. Security Council as a permanent member. Defense ministers for the two countries also signed an agreement to cooperate "in military and military-technical areas."
India and Uzbekistan agreed to fight terrorism on a "long and sustained" basis in an effort to support Afghanistan's attempt to form a "strong, united, prosperous and independent" country, Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said following April 5 talks. They also emphasized the importance of the construction of the Zaranj-Delaram road, a trans-Afghanistan transport road built by India that is vital to connecting Uzbekistan to the Chahbahar port in Iran.
