Iraqi Coalition Government Announced – how long will it survive?
Sonia Joshi
Apr. 6, 2005

Iraq has finally selected the leaders of the coalition Government. Iraq's main Shiite and Kurdish political blocs reached an agreement on government leadership, naming Kurdish leader Jalal Talabani president and Shiite Adel Abd al-Mahdi and Sunni Sheikh Ghazi al-Yawar as vice-presidents. Combined, the Shiite and Kurdish blocs control enough seats in the Iraqi Assembly to name the president and vice-presidents.

The question now is how long will this coalition of convenience survive. The Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis differ so much ideologically, that this coalition Government may fall apart any time. On the other hand, they will be forced to think together to counter the ongoing insurgency. The American will also influence them to think cohesively and run a decent and just Government for the people of Iraq.
