France face gasoline and electricity shortage due to strikes
Special Corresponent
Oct. 19, 2010

France imported electricity Oct. 18 and 19 because of reduced output caused by striking Electricite de France workers, the Electricity Transport Network said.

The highest amounts France imported in an hour were 6,388 megawatts (MW) Oct. 18 and 7,939 MW Oct. 19. A spokeswoman for CGT-Energie Union said power generation declined by approximately 5,000 MW on those days -- 3,000 MW at nuclear power stations and 2,000 MW at heat-and-power stations. Output was reduced at 24 nuclear units, she said, adding that 18 were already shut down and 16 others could not be limited for other reasons.

France will share reserve gasoline stocks and use new vehicles to supply gasoline stations that are facing shortages, French Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Oct. 19. French Ecology Minister Jean-Louis Borloo said 4,000 stations are awaiting supplies, while the head of the French Oil Industries Union said the figure was closer to 2,000. Twenty of 219 fuel depots were being blockaded on the afternoon of Oct. 19, Borloo said.
