The tussle behind the Vatican to choose the new pope
Staff Reporter
Apr. 4, 2005

The tussle behind the Vatican to choose the new pope Staff Reporter The new Pope will be chosen in the next few weeks. The process is very complicated and a lot of tussle between different groups are being fought behind the scene.

Traditionally Popes are from the Italian community and the pressure is on for a conservative Pope from that part of the world. American Catholics want an American Pope or a Pope who understands American Catholics concerns. Then there is a group from the poorer nations who want the Pope to be from South America or Africa. Even Indian cardinals have their wishes known.

By looking at the next Pope who is finally chosen, we will know which group really own.

What the world needs now is a strong humanitarian who can look beyond the needs of the Christians and stand tall for humanity and anti-war principles. The world also needs a Pope who is compassionate and understands the need of the poor and downtrodden. The digital gap, the differential of wealth in the hands of rich and poor have reached such unhealthy proportions that the next Pope will have to be very sensitive to these issues.
