India at 95/0 at the end of second day against Sri Lanka
Suresh Nair
Jul. 27, 2010

India trail SL by 547 runs. At tea, with Sri Lanka at 587 for 3declared their innings.

If most of the play on Day 1 was boring, the second day was all about scoring. It was a run feast for the Sri Lankan middle-order, which all but put paid to India's hopes of squaring the series at the Sinhalese Sports Club. Riding on skipper Kumar Sangakkara's seventh double-century (219) and his deputy Mahela Jayawardene's big ton (174), Sri Lanka declared their first innings at 642 for 4.

Had Mahendra Singh Dhoni converted a stumping opportunity to dismiss Jayawardene off Harbhajan Singh in the 158th over, it could have come sooner. But the missed opportunity didn''t cost India much as Jayawardene chipped one in Harbhajan's next over to offer Murali Vijay a catch, which meant India had to score 443 to avoid the follow-on. Sehwag (64 not out) and Vijay (22 not out) then continued the scoring spree, with the Delhi dasher surpassing Dilip Vengsarkar's tally of 6868 runs with a boundary off debutant Suraj Randiv's first ball. However, both the openers will realise the uphill task has just started and they will have to score big on Wednesday.
