Tight spell from young Ravindra Jadeja : India beat South Africa by 1 run in first ODI

Feb. 21, 2010

Tight spell from young Ravindra Jadeja (10-2-29-2), after batsmen scored a respectable total of 298/9, helped India beat South Africa by incredible 1 run in the first One-Day International at the Sawai Mansingh stadium in Jaipur on Sunday.

Chasing 299-run target, South Africa got off to an aggressive start with openers Loots Bosman (29) and Herschelle Gibbs (27) putting up 58 runs in 8.4 overs before Praveen Kumar clean bowled Bosman.

After losing openers in quick succession, all the middle-order batsmen failed to give stand-in captain Jacques Kallis (89) any substantial support as Proteas lost wickets in regular intervals.

But in the end, tail-enders Wayne Parnell (49) and Dale Steyn (35 off 19 balls) put on a quick-fire 38-ball 65 runs partnership for the ninth wicket. They almost won the match. It was the nerve play between India and South Africa.
