Start of the energy world war? China and Japan threaten each other over Gas rights in the disputed region of the East China Sea
The perception of the fact that the world is fast exhausting all available energy is causing tension in the world. Soon we may see what we feared for many years – countries fighting for oil and gas rights in controversial regions of the world.
The signs of first such tension became clear when China and Japan threatened each other.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman asked Japan to refrain from prospecting for natural gas in the disputed region of the East China Sea. He also reiterated calls for joint exploration efforts between the two countries. Japanese officials said that if China begins prospecting in the disputed areas it would also consider conducting its own exploration. China has said it intends to start drilling operations in August in an area beyond the territorial median line declared by Japan, but not recognized by China.
Similar problems can also arise with India and Burma or Bangladesh in disputed areas. The third world can be based on getting hold of oil and gas fields especially those under the ocean. It is estimated that more than 60% of oil and gas will be supplied from offshore resources from 2007 and beyond.
