U.S., Indonesian Military Exercises announced – a strategy of containing China and fighting terrorism – What is China doing?
American international policy has taken a shrewd turn in the last few years. America is venturing into joint military cooperation with countries that will eventually provide the needed support for fighting terrorism.
Indonesian Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono returned from a March trip to Washington with a promise for naval exercises in July between the U.S. and Indonesian navies in the Java Sea.
If you look at the world map, you will realize that countries friendly to America are slowly encircling the China. Recent warm relations with India and Pakistan also point to the same.
China is not sitting tight either. It is also influencing India, Pakistan and other countries. It is also silently expanding its power reach in the world.
They had a recent hick up in Kyrgyzstan which now is pro-American and pro-Russian. But China’s biggest power is its abilities to be the consumer of the whole of Asia. Japan for example, cannot even imagine today that they can move on without access to Chinese market.
China’s recent push for a Free Trade Agreement with India will be significant for both India and China. If that can pulled through, you are looking at an economic block that will literally control world’s manufacturing, trade and technical services.
China knows very well that it cannot challenge America or Europe in military strength given technology gap. But economic collaborations with countries like India, Russia and Japan is very significant.
While American foreign policy is based on excellent diplomatic charisma; China’s foreign policy is based on economic reality. It is classic cold war. The gainers in this are countries like Indonesia, India, and Pakistan.
These countries now enjoy access to American technology, infrastructure and at the same time also have access to China’s consumer market.
