India offers $100 million to battle Chinese and Pakistani influence in Sri lanka
Anil Rane
Oct. 18, 2009

China is helping Sri Lanka build the Hambantota port, which is part of Beijing's "String of Pearls" strategy of building relations with countries along sea lanes from the Middle East to the South China Sea.
India feels threatened with Chinese and Pakistani influence in Sri lanka.
While India did not openly arm the Sri Lankan military to fight the Tamil Tigers, China and Pakistan had no such problems. They have helped the Sri Lankan army build up its offensive capabilities against the Tamils and the LTTE.
In a human rights crisis, more than 390,000 Tamil refugees who fled fighting in the waning months of the civil war between Sri Lanka and LTTE are now being held in military-run camps. US, EU, India and the United Nations are pressing the Sri lanka government to send them home immediately.
India has offered Sri Lanka $100 million and additional infrastructure help on Sunday to help war refugees return home and rebuild the country's ravaged north. This is seen as an action from New Delhi seeking to engage in the island nation's post-war reconstruction and retain influence.
