Mother Teresa an Indian by her love for humanity, Albania should create a museum of her birth and young daysMother Teresa an Indian by her love for humanity, Albania should create a museum of her birth and young days
Kirit Chauhan
Oct. 17, 2009

She loved Kolkata. It was her home. It was her citadel for her love of humanity. She found herself and reasons to serve the poor, the destitute of the world right in the City of Joy. Mother Teresa chose to describe herself as "By blood, I am Albanian. By citizenship, an Indian. By faith, I am a Catholic nun. As to my calling, I belong to the world."

The Albanian government wants her back, before her 100th birthday next year. Albanian Prime Minister Sali Berisha said his nation plans to open a museum in Mother Teresa's honor and has planned commemorative events.

Should her remains leave Kolkata? Should she be part of her country of origin Alabania just before she receives official Sainthood?

Macedonia, the nation where Mother Teresa was born and raised als0 plans to stake a claim on the woman who is well on a path to sainthood. Should her remains be sent to Macedonia?

India, the land of her citizenship and spritual accomplishments, has made it clear that Mother Teresa, buried in the heart of Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta), will not be leaving her final resting place.

The debate has heated up between Governments about who really Mother Teresa belongs to. It is sad. More important to remember is her compassion for humanity, love for the desitute, and the ability to pardon the helpless for their mistakes. It is sad because certain people find glory in trying to bring her remains in their custody.

Mother Teresa’s remains should stay in Kolkata. She is part of the humanity. The same people who are claiming her remains today should learn from her spiritual accomplishments – ‘do not look at the glory of owning a Saint, learn from her life, her compassion for the poor and the desitute, and her ability to adopt a helpless, captive, slaved (by the British) nation known as India.’
