One of two men arrested in France recently allegedly worked at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) facility at the Cern “big bang” laboratory on the French-Swiss border.
French police says he is a terrorist. No one knows if he really is a terrorist. But according to French authorities, they were watching him for more than eighteen months.
According to media reports from France, the man, a French national of Algerian descent was allegedly in contact with people close to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), a branch of the terrorist network.
What was Al-Qaeda’s real motive? Was it to blow up the LHC? Or, was it to acquire mass destruction capabilities with help of CERN and LHC know how?
Cern has said that the man, arrested on Thursday, was working under a contract with an outside institute. He was not a direct employee of CERN.
According to Le Figaro newspaper’s website, the arrested physicist had been under surveillance by anti-terrorist police for a year and a half.
According to the website, police intercepted Internet communications between the suspect and people in North Africa with links to the Al-Qaeda offshoot. However, no direct information is available from French authorities. Some international think tanks believes that there can be many other people involved in this investigation.
