Medical insurance companies cannot refuse coverage on pre-existing conditions, services based on gender, place caps on coverage, deny children family coverage: Obama
Special Correspondent
Jul. 29, 2009

Insurers would be required to set annual caps on how much they can charge for out-of-pocket expenses, fully cover routine tests to help prevent illness, and renew any policy as long as the policyholder pays their premium in full. Insurers also would be barred from refusing coverage because of pre-existing conditions, scaling back insurance for people who fall very ill, charging more for services based on gender, and placing caps on coverage. And, they wouldn''t be able to deny children family coverage through age 26.

President Obama wants to send a clear signal to the special interest lobbyists – their influence paddling days in Washington is over.

Obama is seeking legislation to extend health insurance to millions who lack it, at the same time he has asked lawmakers to slow the growth in the skyrocketing cost of medical care overall. His latest appeal in visits to Virginia and North Carolina comes as lawmakers moved slowly toward fulfilling his goals.

On Tuesday, a bipartisan group of senators agreed tentatively on a plan to squeeze an additional $35 billion out of Medicare over the next decade and larger sums in the years beyond, according to congressional officials, a step toward Obama's goal of curbing the growth of health care spending.
