Why did Indian PM Manmohan Singh succumb to American pressures and create the drafting blunder in Egypt?
Srinath Maity
Jul. 23, 2009

It was foreign policy blunder by the Indian Prime Minister’s office. But there are increasing indications that it was accepted and made possible by Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh under direct pressure from the American Government.

India’s main opposition party BJP demanded the Foreign Secretary quit his post if he was "guilty" of the "bad drafting" of the Indo-Pak statement in Egypt and also pointed a finger at the Prime Minister and his office saying they could have been responsible for it.

"If it is a case of bad drafting as the Foreign Secretary has said then clearly he also has to explain who is responsible for this. If he is responsible, then he should plead guilty, apologize to the country and quit his post—that I made a mistake and I am going," senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters outside Parliament.

The CPI(M) claimed the draft was made under US pressure. "It was not a bad draft. It was under the US pressure that the draft being made," party leader Sitaram Yechury said.
