Iranian officials confirmed President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's overwhelming victory in a fake recount
Shabir Hussain
Jun. 29, 2009

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's overwhelming victory over his reformist challenger Mir Houssein Mousavi Tuesday has been conformed by the Guardian Council of Iran.

The confirmation closes off Mr. Mousavi's last legal challenge. The Iranian Guardian council has approved the election after a recount of 10% of the ballots.

Intelligence Minister Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejeii warned that suspects found guilty of organizing the protests would face tough sentences, while those engaged in "antirevolutionary" activity "would never be freed," according to the semi-official Fars news agency. State media says the partial results is coming from the recount overseen by the Guardian Council, Iran's top electoral oversight body, which had agreed to review a random 10 percent of ballots.

Mousavi supporters who took part in the mass protests held Sunday night said they were fighting a feeling of despair that their calls for justice would be permanently quashed.
