UPA government ready to focus on welfare, unemployment, healthcare – the basic need for every Indian
Sriram Mahanti
Jun. 27, 2009

It is time for India to instate a social safety net. That is exactly what the coming budget in India will focus on. India’s 500-million-strong workforce needs a safety net to cover loss of jobs or livelihoods, healthcare. India spends approximately 1.2% of its GDP on social welfare, far less than Bangladesh. That is a shame for a country that boasts itself as a software technology giant.
Things are about to change. India could provide the most basic social security to all its citizens if every Indian spent just Rs 139 per month, that is, about 4% of its GDP in 2008. The UPA Government is about to initiate the same soon. UPA will focus on focus on the aam admi — cheap food grain for consumers, investment
in basic infrastructure, healthcare, etc.
