Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak helping Syrian President Syrian President Bashar al Assad in averting catastrophic confrontation with the West
Staff Reporter
Mar. 26, 2005

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is helping Syrian President Syrian President Bashar al Assad in averting a situation of confrontation with the West. The French and Americans want Syria out of Lebanon.

According to sources, Egypt is working with Syria to make them withdraw from Lebanon in a smooth way. Mubarak announced that Syria will announce a precise “time table” for a withdrawal of Syrian forces from Lebanon before April 1. According to Mubarak, Syria is committed to withdraw all military and intelligence officials from Lebanon.

The Hizbullah factor is the wild card though. Hizbullah is not only a militant organization; it is also a political party. It holds close to a dozen of elected seats in Lebanon parliament. Iran and Syria both have influence over the Hizbullah. Hizbullah may not be that opposed to Syrian withdrawal.

Mubarak’s diplomacy is critical at this stage. His efforts can save the region from another turmoil.

One good news is that the region is seeing new hopes of democracy like the rest of the world. Lebabon’s free election may not be too far.
