US offers India F16, F18 and Patriot Missiles – India plans to outgrow Pakistan in economic prosperity not arms
Sudhir Chadda
Mar. 26, 2005

With India's existing superiority in fighters and planned purchases of far more sophisticated arms, its concern was more the symbolism of US sales to Pakistan than the threat posed by F-16s, an ageing design seen as a poor match for new-generation fighters.

Pakistan is expected initially to acquire only 25 F-16s, although Washington has placed no limit on numbers.

India, meanwhile, has sought proposals for the supply of 125 multirole combat aircraft from F-16 manufacturer Lockheed Martin Corp as well as three rival Russian and European firms. India may acquire F16s, F18s as well as Patriot missile defense systems. However, sources say India may decide to go for non-American arms.

According to international think tanks, India plans to outgrow not only Pakistan but also rest of the world in economic prosperity.

Aquiring 25 F16s will not make a big difference. In five to ten years, Indian Space Research initiatives and industrial as well information technology revolution will make it impossible for Pakistan or China to compete with India.

In a way it is good that Pakistan got their wish list – the F16s. Now they have to deliver the Al-Queda leadership.

India’s biggest problem is imported energy not Pakistan or China.

As a matter of fact, Pakistan’s military leadership is now really worried because India’s missile defense systems are making them real nervous.

Retired Pakistani general Talat Masood said India's plans for missile defence could lead Pakistan to lower the threshold at which it would resort to nuclear weapons.

"It's creating insecurities in Pakistan – there's no doubt about that – because capabilities do matter even if the peace process is ongoing," he said.

International think tanks watching Musharraf closely say, the General's biggest concern is super growth in India’s outsourcing capabilities and IT capabilities that not only America but also China is admiring. He is finding a way to match India in economic prosperity which is not easy even for China or America.

China wants a free trade zone with India. That will make Pakistan even more panicked.

India on the other hand should act like a big brother and invite Pakistan as well as other South Asian countries to Participate in the overwhelming economic prosperity that will boom in the next ten years! Soon Pakistan will relaize acquiring F16s may help America save 5000 jobs but the prosperity and well being of Pakistan depends on success in trade and economic growth.
