F16s and “no visa to Modi”– attempts to appease Pakistan in advance of American offensives in Eastern Afghanistan and cross-border operations into Pakistani territory
America needs Pakistan badly. The American forces are preparing for the Spring offensives in Eastern Afghanistan and the cross-border operations into the South Waziristan agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas. The Taliban and the Al-Queda are growing back like a cut plant and is ready to challenge Afghan and American forces in Afghanistan. When these Talibani forces lose, they run away to Pakistan and hide there under the protection of the tribal leaders.
America agreed to deliver the F16s in exchange of something that is not disclosed yet. Most likely Pakistan provided silent approval to chase Al-Queda and Taliban forces into Pakistan’s Tribal areas.
About ten days back, U.S. Army Col. Philip Bookert, the commander of U.S. troops in Western Afghanistan, said his forces would soon be moving to Eastern or Southern Afghanistan. If Bookert's Combined Task Force Longhorn is redeployed to Eastern Afghanistan, his troops will be in a position to support a spring offensive to wipe out remnants of the Taliban and Al-Queda and perhaps capture Osama bin Laden.
The problem for U.S. forces is the fact that neither U.S. nor Pakistan has any control over the South Waziristan agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Areas which Taliban and Al-Queda use as sanctuary and for counter-attacking.
No one is sure if appeasing Pakistan will work. The terrain needs hundreds of thousands of soldiers to perform any substantial seek and scan operations. But at this time Bush Administration has decided to provide Pakistan all the desired “Lollypops” for the time being.
