The seven-phased election for the 89-seat strong State Assembly saw an unprecedented high voter turnout of 61.5 per cent in spite of a boycott provoked by the separatists. The elections were held in the backdrop of the Amarnath land row, which the terrorists and separatists used as a means to spark off protests marches and violence in different parts of the state.

BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told media reporters that the election results in Jammu and Kashmir indicated people's preference for nationalistic and united India. It was defeat for the Pakistan based terrorism and separatism.

"People have indicated their preference about nationalistic India and is a very frank reply to the separatists that their time is over, both in terms of voter percentage and results. It is time for united Kashmir under Indian constitution that provides equal rights to all its citizens," Prasad said.
