Ecological disaster as Cargo ships collide and oil leaks near Goa endangering marine life
Near Goa, Singaporean cargo ship’s fuel tank leaked when a barge collided against it after midnight. Coast Guard patrol vessels and aircraft were fighting hard to avoid the oil leak from sipping into Goa beaches and marine life reserve resorts in the area.
The merchant vessel Maritime Wisdom and a barge Prapti collided causing a one mile long and 100 meter wide oil slick.
Coast Guard deputy inspector general Abu Thalha said that the oil sleak is under control and the wind as well as ocean currents are helping. Adequate measures are in place to contain the mess and protect the marine lives.
The oil sleak has already floated 5.4 nautical miles from the original leaking position of Maritime Wisdom.
Coast Guard interceptor craft, a C140 and Mormugao Port Trust vessels equipped with oil dispersants were fighting to contain the oil slick. The offshore patrol vessel, the Vigraha, and the advanced offshore patrol vessel, the Sagar, equipped with pollution response equipment are rushing towards the disaster site from the Mumbai port.
